House terms
These are sample house terms.

Membership
Membership is personal to you and can’t be lent or passed on. It runs for a year and renews each year unless you tell us otherwise. The committee decides who joins, and reviews membership from time to time.

Guests
You may bring guests within the limits of your membership, signed in at the door. Your guests remain your responsibility while they’re in the house, and are asked to keep to the same house rules as members.

Conduct
The house runs on consideration. We ask members and guests to keep to the house rules, to respect the quiet of the Reading Room, and to look after one another. The committee may ask anyone to leave who doesn’t.

Fees
Annual fees and any joining fee are as shown on the membership page, and are payable when you join and at each renewal. Fees paid are not usually refundable. We’ll always tell you before anything changes.

Cancellation
You may leave at any time by writing to the Membership Secretary; your membership then runs to the end of the year you’ve paid for. Private hire and event bookings have their own terms, which we’ll set out when you book.

Changes
From time to time we may change the house rules, the hours or these terms — to run the house better, not to catch anyone out. We’ll let members know when we do, and the current version always lives here.
